German Translation for the 2019 Levels of Preservation Matrix Now Available

Translators’ note:

In the English version of the Levels of Digital Preservation, the term “content” is used synonymously with “digital content” (see https://www.dpconline.org/blog/introducing-the-new-ndsa-levels-of-preservation).

In the German translation, the term “content” is translated as “digital content” in each of the four levels and in the associated catalog of measures. This makes it clear that the measures described in the LoPs refer to digital (content) objects with both physical, logical and semantic properties and that the focus is not only on semantic-intellectual content. 

The functional areas “Control” and “Content” have been provided with additions in the German translation for the purpose of better understanding and for conciseness; these additions are in parenthesis in each case: In the “(Zugriffs-)Kontrolle” functional area, the control measures described refer primarily to access rights for persons and software applications and to associated access measures (such as deleting a file). The addition of “(essenzielle Eigenschaften)” to the “Content” functional area was made to clarify that the measures described here relate in particular to technical properties, such as file formats, which are regarded essential for digital content in the context of long-term archiving. 

The additions were made in consultation with the NDSA Levels of Digital Preservation Steering Committee.

In der deutschen Übersetzung wird der Begriff “content” in den vier Levels sowie in dem dazugehörigen Maßnahmenkatalog jeweils als “digitaler Inhalt” übersetzt. Dies macht deutlich, dass sich die in den LoPs beschriebenen Maßnahmen auf digitale (Inhalts-)Objekte mit sowohl physischen, logischen als auch semantischen Eigenschaften beziehen und der Fokus nicht nur auf semantisch-intellektuellen Inhalten liegt. 

Die Funktionsbereiche “Control” und “Content” sind in der deutschen Übersetzung zum Zwecke der besseren Verständlichkeit und zur Konkretisierung mit Ergänzungen versehen worden, die jeweils in Klammern stehen: Im Funktionsbereich “(Zugriffs-)Kontrolle” beziehen sich die beschriebenen Kontroll-Maßnahmen vordergründig auf die Zugriffsrechte für Personen und Softwareanwendungen und auf damit verbundene Zugriffsmaßnahmen (wie z.B. Löschen einer Datei). Die Ergänzung des Funktionsbereichs “Inhalt” um den Zusatz “(essenzielle Eigenschaften)” wurde vorgenommen, um zu verdeutlichen, dass sich die hier beschriebenen Maßnahmen insbesondere auf technische Eigenschaften wie zum Beispiel Dateiformate beziehen, die im Kontext der Langzeitarchivierung als essenziell für digitale Inhalte angesehen werden.

Announcing Finnish Translations of the 2019 Levels of Preservation Matrix and Assessment Tool

The NDSA is pleased to announce that the 2019 Levels of Preservation documents have been translated into Finnish by our colleagues from CSC – IT Center for Science and the Finnish digital preservation collaboration group. 

Translations for the Assessment Tool Template and both versions of the Levels of Digital Preservation Matrix were completed.

Levels of Digital Preservation Digital Curation Decision Guide Published

It is with great pleasure to announce that the Levels of Digital Preservation work continues to roll out. In these waning days of 2020, the Curatorial Team of the Levels has released its first published edition of the Digital Curation Decision Guide. This guide forms the basis of a series of decision points around collections and the implementation of a preservation strategy. It is not just for the preservation specialist but rather, it attempts to highlight the preservation implications of collections decisions. It is the group’s desire that the Guide will facilitate dialogue between and among stakeholders across a given organization and inculcate a preservation mindset without necessarily having to be a deep expert. It is also not prescriptive. It is a non-linear exploration of multiple vectors that make up curatorial decision-making such as collection development, intellectual and security considerations, and technical capacity. The Guide has both a visual and prose version to explore from different angles the basic factors in complex infrastructure and collections management decisions. 

The Decision Guide will be extended in the future, linking up with other efforts such as actively maintained working definitions, policy frameworks and examples, as well as the revision of the Levels, themselves.

I would like to thank the many people who gave us exceptional feedback along the way. This group started in late 2018 and worked for two years to craft something we hope will form a part of your organizational practice. In particular, I want to spotlight the work of the individuals who stuck it out to the very end:

Announcing Spanish Translations for the 2019 and 2013 Levels Matrix

The NDSA is pleased to announce that both the original (2013) and Version 2 (2019) of the Levels Matrix  have been translated into Spanish by our colleagues from Mexico and Spain, Dr. David Leija (Universidad Autónoma de Tamaulipas) and Dr. Miquel Térmens (Universitat de Barcelona). Drs. Leija and Térmens are academic researchers and founders of APREDIG (Ibero-American association for digital preservation), a non-profit organization focused on spreading the importance of good practices of digital preservation for the spanish-speaking community.

La NDSA se complace en anunciar que tanto la versión original como la versión 2 de la Matriz de Niveles de Preservación Digital han sido traducidas al español por nuestros colegas investigadores de México y España, el Dr. David Leija (Universidad Autónoma de Tamaulipas) y el Dr. Miquel Térmens (Universitat de Barcelona). Térmens y Leija son investigadores académicos fundadores de APREDIG (Asociación Iberoamericana de Preservación Digital), una organización sin ánimo de lucro enfocada en difundir la importancia de las buenas prácticas de preservación digital para la comunidad hispanohablante.

Award Winners: NDSA Levels of Digital Preservation Group

This year’s World Digital Preservation Day (#WDPD) was the biggest yet! With outpourings of research, achievements, practical advice, and fun it was hard to believe that there were also awards as part of that process.

On 05 November, the NDSA’s Levels of Digital Preservation Reboot was the recipient of one of the Digital Preservation Coalition’s Digital Preservation Award! We won in the ICA-sponsored category for Collaboration and Cooperation – the first time it has been awarded!  This honor is collectively bestowed on the many of you who helped craft and refine the Levels and we hope your continued ideas, and enthusiasm will keep the momentum going. Thank you for all your hard work! For an overview, background, and charge for the Levels, see my blog post that speaks to leveraging such a high level of collaborative energy.

We can’t believe it’s been almost 9 months since Version 2 of the Levels of Preservation was released at DigiPres 2019! As we continue to move forward with other resources that build on the revised Levels, we wanted to hear from you about how the revisions and associated documents like the Implementation Guidelines and Assessment Tool have worked for you over these past 9 months.

Turkish Translations of the 2019 Levels of Preservation Implementation Guide and Matrix

The NDSA is pleased to announce that the 2019 Levels of Preservation documents have been translated into Turkish by Özhan SAĞLIK who is working as a lecturer in the Bursa Uludag University Library. Levels are desired to use for institutions to assess their digital preservation activities in Turkey.

Translations were completed for the Implementation Document of the 2019 Levels of Digital Preservation, and the black and white version of the Levels of Digital Preservation Matrix.

Now Available: French Translations of the 2019 Levels of Preservation and Associated Documents

The NDSA is pleased to announce that the 2019 Levels of Preservation documents have been translated into French by our colleagues from the French National watch unit on file formats which includes institutions like the National Library of France, the Departmental Archives of Moselle, or the École nationale des Chartes.

Translations for the Assessment Tool Documentation and Case Studies, the Assessment Tool Template, the Implementation Document of the 2019 Levels of Digital Preservation, and both versions of the Levels of Digital Preservation Matrix were completed.

Teaching, outreach and advocacy for the NDSA Levels of Preservation

In October 2019 after several months of collaboration and hard work, the NDSA was pleased to announce the publication of version 2 of the Levels of Preservation.

A follow up blog post on the Digital Preservation Coalition blog highlighted in particular the work of the Revision Working Group and flagged up some of the main changes that were made in moving the original Levels to version 2.

Moving forward, the Levels of Preservation reboot effort was more than just the work of the Revision group. Bradley Daigle describes in ‘Levels of Preservation Reboot Overview and Update’ just how many working groups were beavering away behind the scenes and contributing to this wider community effort.

Here he summarises each group and their charge:

  1. Curatorial: craft a pre-LoP set of decisions/guidelines to allow non-technical professionals understand the implications of preservation decisions that happen in and around the appraisal of materials. These decisions could then be mapped to the organization’s implementation of the LoP.
  2. Assessment: explore the past and current use and adaptation of the LoP framework for institutional benchmarking and assessment of digital preservation readiness or as a method to review progress towards institutional preservation goals.
  3. Implementation: discover the use and adaption of the LoP framework to implement or improve digital preservation infrastructure, administration, and maintenance. Who is using the Lop, who isn’t – and why?
  4. Revision: update and add to the current themes included in the LoP (storage, fixity, migration, security, metadata, file formats, etc.).
  5. Documentation: articulate the ways in which the LoP may be transparently and publicly updated, commented on, distributed, critiqued, used, and integrated widely across many groups/sectors – nationally and internationally.
  6. Teaching, Outreach, and Advocacy: Explore the use and adaption of the LoP as a teaching tool for understanding digital preservation concepts and pragmatic use and to advocate for preservation resources.

Whilst most of these groups can now sit back, happy in the knowledge they have met their brief, there is one working group still to roll up their sleeves and start work – Teaching, Outreach and Advocacy.

Now the other elements of the reboot are complete, the task remains to provide some materials for teaching and outreach. As the resources associated with the NDSA Levels of Preservation have increased, there is an increasing need to ensure that the community knows what is available and how to make the most of it. These materials will be the fuel for encouraging advocacy by NDSA members and beyond.

A small working group is considering this issue currently and plans to come up with some training materials, presentations and an FAQ to help guide those who would like to get started with the NDSA Levels and associated materials.

Watch for a follow up from us, we will be looking for members who might be interested in reviewing this content once it’s ready so please shout if you’d like to help out with this continuation of the reboot work. We are aiming to share the finished outcomes of this work at the NDSA Digital Preservation meeting in November 2020.
